In the aftermath of World War 2 the two pioneers of alpinism and alpine skiing legends Hans Steger and Paula Wiesinger moved to the Alpe di Siusi. They acquired the famous Dellai mountain hut and turned it into a hotel. After Hans's death, the "Hans and Paula Steger foundation" was brought to life. The goal of this association is to protect and promote the Alpe di Siusi as a protected area, as well as to support the mountain rescue service in the Dolomites. The Hans and Paula Steger path was set up by the same foundation.

The easy and flat itinerary is embedded in the stunning natural landscape between Compaccio and Saltria. At the church of Compaccio we take path no. 30 which we follow until the fork at the Hotel Steger-Dellai where we cross the paved road. After the crossroads, the itinerary continues along the forest edge until the Ritsch-Schwaige restaurant where we admire an impressive panoramic view of the Sassolungo and the Sasso Piatto. The hiking path then merges into a paved road before descending to Saltria across enchanting alpine meadows. If you would like to extend this tour you can do so by taking path no. 12A, 12 or 9 to Saltria.

The 4.5 km long walk can be completed in slightly more than an hour (each direction). If you don't want to walk back to Compaccio you can take the bus. The easy Hans and Paula Steger path was set up to protect this unequalled natural area and ensures wonderful panoramic views of the landscape on the Alpe di Siusi and the Dolomites which is characterised by a rich flora and fauna. The information panels along the route provide interesting information on the surroundings and also tell the legend of the Partschott who is said to have lived here at the time of King Laurin.
