From Saltria to Passo Sella on the Frederick Augustus Trail

Hiking along the southern edge of Mt Sasso Piatto from Saltria to the Passo Sella, passing the Sasso Piatto mountain hut (2,297 m a.s.l.).

We start our hiking tour at the bus station in Saltria, passing the valley station of the Florian chairlift (1,650 m a.s.l.) and following trail no. 7A. The ascent to the mountain station (2,300 m a.s.l.) is quite steep and exhausting, but leads us through a beautiful landscape of meadows and woods. We have a short rest at the Zallinger mountain hut (2,050 m a.s.l.) before we continue our hiking tour on the steep trail no. 9 to the Sasso Piatto mountain hut. Here, in the middle of our 10.5 km long tour, we taste some delicious apricot dumplings. Finally arrived at the Frederick Augustus Trail (no. 4 and 557), we continue our hiking tour and enter the territory of Campitello di Fassa (Trentino).

Very near to Mt Sasso Piatto (2,969 m a.s.l.), we are following a narrow, but easy trail with only few secured sections. At the end of June, when anemones, yellow gentians and edelweiss are in full bloom, this area is particularly attractive. Arrived at the Sandro Pertini moutain hut, we have a great view of Mt Sasso Piatto. Our next stop is at the Frederick Augustus mountain hut (Rifugio Federico Augusto, in Italian), dedicated to Frederick Augustus III of Saxony, who loved the Dolomites and even spent a night in this mountain hut.

Getting closer to Passo Sella, the view of the Sella Group, which we have already seen from further away, becomes more and more impressive. We also see the highest peak of the Dolomites, Mt Marmolada (3,343 m a.s.l.). The last section of our tour follows a forest road through lush meados on Passo Sella, offering great views of Mt Dente, Mt Sasso Levante, Mt Punta delle Cinque Dita and Mt Sassolungo with its "City of Stones". In fact, on this hiking tour we enjoyed fantastic views of the Dolomites panorama.

Information: if you don't want to hike the same way back, you can take the bus from the Passo Sella to Ortisei in the Val Gardena and Castelrotto.
