From Saltria we arrive at the Sasso Piatto mountain hut at 2,297 m a.s.l. and pass the southern ridge of the Sasso Piatto before reaching Passo Sella

We start our hike at the bus station in Saltria and head to the valley station of the Florian chair lift which takes us up to about 2,100 m a.s.l. We pass the Zallinger Berghaus hut at 2,050 m a.s.l. and tackle a steep descent along path no. 9 taking us to the Utia de Sas Plat hut (Plattkofelhütte in German). Here, starts the Frederick Augustus trail (signposts no. 4 and 557). Now we are in the municipal area of Campitello di Fassa in Trentino.
We approach the Sasso Piatto. As we tackle the sections characterised by rock ridges we need to mind our heads. The narrow path is not particularly difficult, except for some short secured sections. In late June the flora is in full bloom and the meadows and rocks are covered with blossoming anemones and gentians. The next refreshment point is the Federico Augusto hut which, like the path, is dedicated to Frederick Augustus III, the prince-elector of Saxony who was in love with the Dolomites and spend some nights in the mountain huts.
The repeaters and the characteristic rock formations of the Col Rodella are already visible from far. As we approach the Passo Sella, the panoramic view of the Sella Group on the opposite side of the Val di Fassa and of the Marmolada, the highest peak of the Dolomites (3,343 m a.s.l.) gets better and better. We cover the last section on a wide forest road leading through the verdant meadows of Passo Sella admiring stunning panoramic views of the Dente, the Sasso Levante, the Punta delle Cinque Dita and the Sassolungo with the so-called "City of Rocks". Thanks to this hike we discovered the Dolomites in all their beauty.
Note: if you don't want to retrace your steps to return to the starting point you can take the bus on the Passo Sella to return to Castelrotto via Ortisei in Val Gardena.
