Sant’Osvaldo

The small village of Sant’Osvaldo is located in the south west of Castelrotto, high above the Valle Isarco at 750 m a.s.l

Sant'Osvaldo is located at 750 m beneath the Laranza forest, between the Valle Isarco and the valley of the Rio Freddo in the Sciliar-Catinaccio Nature Park. A little road takes from Siusi allo Sciliar into the village and further on to Ponte Gardena. Ancient farms refer to the ancient settlement history of Sant'Osvaldo, which is considered to have started about 4,000 years ago.

Today the village comprises several farms and has got 140 inhabitants, the most famous of which is probably Norbert Rier, the front-man of the local music group "Kastelruther Spatzen", one of the most famous folk music bands in the German-speaking area. He also owns a successful Haflinger stud farm. One of the main sights in the village is the Farmer's Museum hosted by the Tschötscher Farm. This is where you can admire a collection of items and objects used by farmers in bygone centuries.

The church, however, that is consecrated to St. Oswald and to Pope Sylvester, dates back to the Romanesque period of time, but was converted to Baroque style, as the bulbous spire reveals. Only within a short walk, there are the Rovereto Ruin and the organic herb farm Pflegerhof with its show garden. Due to its beneficial location, also wine is cultivated in this place. For this reason it is also an ideal place for spending a pleasant Toerggele evening in autumn with chestnuts and new wine.
