Church of Tisana

At 925 m a.s.l. stands the St. Nicholas Church with its azure ceiling in the nave

The St. Nicholas Church is located in the hamlet of Tisana (Tisens) which belongs to the municipality of Castelrotto (Kastelruth) and can be reached from there in a pleasant walk. The building dates back to 1353, while the road was not built until 1887. On the outer wall a beautiful fresco depicts St. Christopher - it was created in 1791 and restored some decades ago.

The interior of the church presents itself in the typical style of Gothic country churches. The winged altar shows the Annunciation on the outside, Pope Sylvester and Bishop Nicholas on the inside and Our Lady with Saints Nicholas and Leonhard in the shrine itself. A particular curiosity is the sky blue ceiling of the nave.

St. Nicholas, one of the most venerated saints of the Catholic and Orthodox Church, is celebrated on December 6. Many professions have chosen him as patron saint, such as sailors, grain traders, lawyers and pharmacists.
