San Osvaldo
The village of San Osvaldo is located in the south west of Castelrotto, high above Valle Isarco, and is the home of the most famous citizens of Castelrotto.
Located at 750 m asl beneath the forest of Laranz, between the Valle Isarco and the Rio Frötsch. A little road takes from Siusi into the village and further on to Ponde Gardena. Ancient farms refer to the ancient settlement history of San Osvaldo, which is considered to have started about 4,000 m ago. Today the village comprises several farms and has got 150 inhabitants, the most famous of which is probably Norbert Rier, the front-man of the local music group Kastelruther Spatzen, who also owns an extraordinarily successful Haflinger stud farm.
One of the main sights in the village is the Farm Museum hosted by the Tschötscherhof farm. This is where you can admire a collection off items and objects used by farmers in bygone centuries. The church that is consecrated to the four evangelists, dates back to the Romanesque period of time, but was converted to Baroque style, as the bulbous spire reveals.
Only within a short walk, there are the ruin of Castel Aichbach and the herb farm Kräuterhof Pfleger. Due to its beneficial location, also wine is cultivated in this place. For this reason it is also an ideal place for spending a pleasant Toerggele evening in autumn.
